Between managing busy routines, family schedules, and the little daily “surprises,” it’s easy to let things slide in the home improvement department. But a little planning can go a long way toward a year of healthy home maintenance, and will even pay off in the long run.

Creating, and sticking to, a home improvement calendar is a great way to keep your home in shape this year, whether it’s just for your family to enjoy or to keep your home competitive with the market. From planting a garden in the spring to contracting roof repairs before the summer, here’s a seasonal guide for charting out a yearlong home improvement calendar.

January-March

Create a list of home improvements you hope to accomplish through out the year, then divide them out over the course of 12 months with a monthly budget attached to each. That should keep the list from becoming overwhelming. Since you’ll most likely be stuck inside due to cold weather and dreary days, popular springtime home improvement projects include anything indoors. Use this time to play with your furniture arrangement, update cabinet hardware, and remodel or update the bathrooms, making sure to check toilets and faucets for leaks.

April-June

These months are perfect for spring cleaning and refreshing your home, but if the weather is already heating up in your part of the country, the earlier you can plant a garden the better! Consider this the best time of year for a new paint job, and definitely get a head start on your summer and winter produce by planting that vegetable garden you’ve been talking about or building that deck and grilling area you’ve been dreaming about for years. If window replacements are on your yearlong list, this is a great season to get a head start on this project before the heat of the summer seeps through your walls.

July-September

The months of July, August, and September are not only great for enjoying the warm temperatures outdoors (especially with that new deck you just put in!), but it’s also a great time of year to get a jump on checking out your furnace to avoid the peak season of furnace repair. Also, if a kitchen remodel is on your list, consider this the time to cook outdoors! Since your kitchen will be temporarily out of order, you can use your new outdoor kitchen (grill, mini fridge, etc.) as your backup during the remodel.

October-December

While this season is all about decking the halls for the holidays, it’s also a great time to get a handle on your air quality while prepping for the chilly days ahead. Consider this time of year prime for winterizing your pool and pipes while installing faucet covers to avoid freezing pipes. Bedroom remodels are great this time of year as well since the rest of your home will be cozy enough to snuggle up in while your room is “in the works.” October through December is also perfect for servicing your air conditioner to avoid being wait listed during peak season.
