Handy Tips for Summer Safety

With the arrival of summer cookouts, long days at the pool, camping trips, picnics, and other outdoor activities, the allure of summertime fun can often put safety precautions in the shade. Make sure you stay safe with these simple tips:

  • Drink at least 8 ounces of water before heading outside
  • Schedule breaks to sit in the shade and rehydrate
  • Avoid intense activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Apply sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (Ask your doctor about the best SPF rating and products for children)
    While everyone needs to be aware of sun safety tips, some medications and medical conditions require a doctor’s advice..

“People with medical conditions should talk to their medical provider starting any activity or before spending time in the heat,” says Will Humble, director at Arizona Department of Health Services.

In the water

  • Be aware of local weather conditions
  • Avoid alcohol when swimming or boating
  • Swim in supervised areas
  • Humble suggests swimming in groups of two or more

“In general, [swimmers] should always use the buddy system, whether it’s a mom and child or two friends,” Humble says. “Make sure that you can always see your swim partner.”

For children, the Centers for Disease Control recommends a designated guardian to watch youngsters who are swimming or in the water at all times, free of distractions such as talking or texting and cooking.

The CDC also recommends:

  • When in open bodies of water such as lakes, children should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. The jacket should fit snugly and not allow for slip through by the chin or ears.
  • Parents and caregivers should take a CPR safety course prior to any summer water activities.

Grilling outdoors

Summer is the perfect time to prepare delicious barbecue dishes for friends and family. Grill master and GrillGrrrl blog author Robyn Medlin Lindars shares her tips for safe summer barbecue:

  • Follow your community’s guidelines for grilling outdoors.
  • Always keep your grill at least six feet away from trees or structures that can catch fire.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher or large bottle of water on hand if flames get out of control.
  • To discourage flare-ups, close your grill’s lid to cut off the flame’s oxygen source.
